🧼 White Coat or Not? What to Wear for Your ERAS Headshot
When it comes to what to wear for your ERAS headshot, the stakes are high—this single image represents your professionalism, your confidence, and your attention to detail.
At Tals Studio, we’ve helped thousands of medical students perfect their ERAS photos. Here's what we've learned (and what residency programs expect):
1️⃣ Skip the White Coat (Unless It's Required)
While it may seem obvious to wear your white coat, most residency programs actually prefer business attire. Unless your program specifically requests it, stick to:
Collared shirt or blouse
Conservative necklines
2️⃣ Keep Accessories to a Minimum
Avoid:
Large earrings
Busy patterns
Bright/neon colorsStick with clean, solid, and neutral tones. Jewelry should be small and professional.
3️⃣ Choose Solid Colors Over Patterns
Why? Patterns can be distracting or distort on camera. Solid navy, light blue, or soft gray work best. Avoid pure white shirts unless paired with a dark blazer.
4️⃣ Hair and Grooming Matter
Hair should be neatly styled away from your face
Facial hair should be well-groomed (or clean-shaven)
Avoid heavy makeup or overly glossy finishes
5️⃣ When in Doubt, Ask the Experts
